Work Description:
|
The left half of this vertical composition is dominated by a puzzle of lines and space. Groups of lines fall and shoot off the left, top and bottom edge of the work, crossing and looping around creating multiple areas of negative space that Still has painted flat matte tones of brown, gold, and maroon. The right side of the canvas is painted with varied tones of blue and black, and is varnished to create a reflective surface that contrasts with the matte forms on the left. A tall, narrow, black form shoots into space from the bottom edge and rises up to the top center of the composition, dividing the chaotic left half from the quieter, mysterious right side. Two tiny white dots are placed at the top of this form, suggesting that the form might be figural in nature. From the top left area of the composition, a white hammock-shaped form swoops down in front of the figure towards the bottom right and then up again into the blue-black field, ending in a point near the right center edge. Below this white shape a zig-zagged tool-like object emerges from the surrounding darkness.
