Work Description:
The warm and generative quality of black, combined with the brown outline of the canvas gives the work an organic, lifelike quality. Still left three portions of the canvas untouched, providing an outline shaping particular vertical forms. The left shape almost appears avian, with a thin black vertical shape, gradually expanding in the middle, and finally tapering at the head. Additional flashes of red, indigo, and purple appear at the top. The middle form is a simple yellow vertical lifeline smoothly zig-zagging through the center of the work. The vertical black form emerging from the top right of the work reifies the key role that verticality played in Still's works.
