Work Description:
This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of the exhibition “Paintings by Clyfford Still” at the San Francisco Museum of Art in California. An unidentified painting occupies a partition in the left foreground. An additional unidentified painting is on display on the far left wall in the background, followed by PH-1013 (1938) and PH-257 (1935) to the left of an arched doorway. PH-206 (1938) and an unidentified painting hang to the right of the doorway. Proceeding clockwise, PH-96 (1941, lost), PH-342 (1937), PH-748 (1938, lost), PH-733 (1940, destroyed), PH-933 (1929, destroyed), PH-936 (1939, lost), PH-623 (1929-30), and PH-554 (1942) line the wall to the right. Still’s first wife, Lillian, and eldest daughter, Diane, appear in the background of the gallery. On view March 2 through March 21, 1943, the retrospective featured a selection of figurative and abstract paintings that spanned the early years of Still’s career. According to the museum’s accession files, the artist submitted thirty-two paintings in total: ten “portraits and landscapes” and twenty-two “less realistic pictures”, although not all of the artworks were shown. As indicated by the handwritten note accompanying the photograph, the absence of detailed documentation complicates the act of determining which specific artworks were ultimately displayed; however, these installation views serve as visual records that confirm the majority of the paintings presented in Still’s first significant one-person exhibition.
