Work Description:
This color slide depicts an installation view of the exhibition “American Art at Mid-Century 1” at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. David Smith's sculpture "The Banquet" (1951) appears in the foreground, while Isamu Noguchi's sculpture "Strange Bird" (1946, cropped) occupies an adjacent gallery in the background. From left to right, Arshile Gorky's "The Orators" (1947), William Baziotes's "Serpentine" (1961), Bradley Walker Tomlin's "No. 7" (1950), and Jackson Pollock's "Blue Poles" (1952) line the walls. On view October 28, 1973 through January 6, 1974, the exhibition featured twenty-six paintings and sculptures by twenty-three American artists. The presentation of these works demonstrated the diverse artistic styles of post-World War II New York.
