Work Description:
This color slide depicts an installation view of the exhibition “American Art at Mid-Century 1” at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. From left to right, Mark Tobey's "New York" (1944, cropped), Isamu Noguchi's sculpture "Strange Bird" (1946), Tobey’s "Drift of Summer" (1942, cropped), and Adolph Gottlieb's "Hot Horizon" (1956) line the gallery space. On view October 28, 1973 through January 6, 1974, the exhibition featured twenty-six paintings and sculptures by twenty-three American artists. The presentation of these works demonstrated the diverse artistic styles of post-World War II New York.
