Work Description:
This color slide depicts an installation view of the group exhibition “A Period of Exploration: San Francisco, 1945-1950” at the Oakland Museum in California. On view September 4 through November 4, 1973, the exhibition featured eighty-five paintings and sculptures by forty-one artists who lived and worked in the Bay Area throughout the years immediately following World War II. The presentation of these artworks not only highlighted the emergence of the Abstract Expressionist movement on the West Coast, but at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute) specifically. Still taught at CSFA from 1946-1950, where he dramatically influenced the artistic development of his students and colleagues.
