This notebook served as the visitors' log for the exhibition "Paintings by Clyfford Still" at the Metart Gallery in San Francisco. Lists of names and a few comments appear beneath each dated entry. While most of the visitors were students at the California School of Fine Arts, Still's academic colleague and fellow Abstract Expressionist painter Ad Reinhardt also signed the exhibition's register. In 1946, Still returned to the Bay Area to begin teaching at the California School of Fine Arts. A group of students opened the Metart Gallery at the artist's recommendation in 1949. With the announcement of his resignation from his position the following year, Still's students invited him to show a selection of thirteen paintings, twelve of which were completed during his teaching term at the school. On view June 17 through July 14, 1950, the presentation of these artworks served as the gallery’s final exhibition.
