Mark Rothko, artist: February 1946 / By-passing the current preoccupation with genre and the nuances of formal arrangements, Still expresses the tragic-religious drama which is generic to all Myths at all times, no matter where they occur. Every shape becomes an organic entity, inviting the multiplicity of associations inherent in all living things.....a profound and moving experience
Work Inscription:
Howard DeVree, art critic of The New York Times: / April 1947 / ....Rather more startling are the untitled paintings by Clyfford Still. These big emotional paintings are almost non-objective; but the type of emotion behind these highly personal expressions comes through. Grimness, sparseness, melancholy are in them.
Work Inscription:
Alfred Frankenstein, art and music critic of The San Francisco Chronicle: March 1943 / ...Vaguely like Picasso...perfect examples of modern experiment misunderstood and misapplied.
Work Inscription:
Andre Breton, writer, poet, and leader of the Surrealist movement: February 1946 / (To Peggy Guggenheim concerning work shown in 1943 in the San Francisco Museum of Art) Most unique. Without precedents. One of his paintings should be in your collection.
Work Inscription:
Clement Greenberg, art critic of The Nation: / April 1947 / I don't like them. They are too much of the spirit. We need more of the physical.
Work Inscription:
Robert Motherwell, artist and editor of The Documents of Modern Art: April 1947 / I feel that these pictures are not concerned with relative values but the absolute. They reject conventional modes of communication, yet they fill me with emotion.

Work Description:
This black and white photographic reproduction illustrates a wall label that was mounted near the entrance to the exhibition “Paintings by Clyfford Still” at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The label, titled "COMMENTS", presents quotations by notable artists and critics. Statements by an anonymous viewer, Mark Rothko, Howard DeVree, Alfred Frankenstein, Andre Breton, Clement Greenberg, and Robert Motherwell demonstrate various dissenting opinions regarding the perception of Still's paintings. On view July 2 through August 3, 1947, the one-person exhibition featured thirteen artworks, six of which were completed during Still’s teaching term at the California School of Fine Arts. The presentation of these radical abstractions proved to be highly influential among other artists working in the Bay Area at the time.
