Work Description:
These labels document registrarial information for two paintings exhibited in “Paintings by Clyfford Still” at the San Francisco Museum of Art in California. Both labels record the exhibition, artist, titles, accession numbers, and the date that the artworks were received by the institution. In the list of thirty-two paintings submitted to the museum, Still provided titles for the ten “portraits and landscapes” and twenty-two “less realistic pictures”; however, because the artist later disregarded titles in favor of a coded numbering system, it is difficult to determine which titles were associated with each artwork. The upper label references a painting titled “The White Hand”. In his 1984 dissertation, David Anfam speculates that this title refers to PH-932 (1936-37, destroyed) due to the painting’s imagery. Similarly, the lower label, “Man with an Orange Lily” probably refers to PH-257 (1935), as the work depicts a figure holding an orange flower. On view March 2 through March 21, 1943, the retrospective featured a selection of figurative and abstract paintings that spanned the early years of Still’s career.
