Work Description:

This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of “Third Annual Exhibition of Painting” at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. A portion of Mark Rothko’s “Untitled” (1948, cropped) appears on the left edge of the frame, followed clockwise by Roberto Matta’s “Imachus Source of Lips” (ca. 1947), Yves Tanguy’s “From One Night to Another” (1947), Ezio Martinelli’s “The Village” (1947), and William Baziotes’s “Moon Forms” (1947) on the far right. A mobile by Alexander Calder hangs from the gallery's ceiling. On view December 1, 1948 through January 16, 1949, the presentation of 150 figurative and abstract paintings served as a cross-section of contemporary art in postwar America. Curator Jermayne MacAgy invited 115 artists to participate in the exhibition, while a jury selected the remaining artworks from a group of Bay Area painters.
