Work Description:
This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of the exhibition “Paintings by Clyfford Still” at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. PH-942 (1946, now destroyed), PH-199 (1946), and PH-197 (1944) hang in the gallery from left to right. A typed notation on transparent paper documents information concerning the paintings' titles, materials, provenance, measurements, and exhibition histories. On view July 2 through August 3, 1947, the one-person exhibition featured thirteen artworks, six of which were completed during Still’s teaching term at the California School of Fine Arts. The presentation of these radical abstractions proved to be highly influential among other artists working in the Bay Area at the time.
