Work Description:
This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of the exhibition “New York School: The First Generation, Paintings of the 1940s and 1950s” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California. On the far left, two paintings by Robert Motherwell occupy a small gallery. A portion of "Jour la Maison, Nuit la Rue" (1957, cropped) appears at the edge of the frame, while "At Five in the Afternoon" (1950) is situated before a bench. Proceeding clockwise, Clyfford Still's PH-175 (1947), PH-370 (1946), PH-235 (1944), and PH-383 (1950-51) line the walls of the space on the right. On view June 18 through August 1, 1965, the exhibition featured artworks by fifteen first-generation Abstract Expressionists. An average of eight paintings per artist demonstrated the influence and evolution of the New York School during the 1940s and 1950s.
