Work Description:
This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of “First Exhibition, Paintings: Clyfford Still” at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century Gallery in New York, on view February 12 through March 7, 1946. PH-515 (1945, cropped) is situated on an easel to the left, and PH-233 (1945) hangs between two doorways. In the background, PH-159 (1944-45, cropped), PH-315 (1945, cropped), and PH-193 (1945) appear from left to right. Typed notations offer information concerning the artworks’ materials, provenance, and measurements. As Still’s first one-person show in New York, the exhibition featured twelve paintings, as well as a portfolio of twenty-three works on paper. Mark Rothko wrote the influential text for the exhibition’s brochure, while Guggenheim purportedly assigned mythological titles to each artwork at the suggestion of Surrealist André Breton.
