Work Description:
This black and white photograph depicts an installation view of “First Exhibition, Paintings: Clyfford Still” at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century Gallery in New York, on view February 12 through March 7, 1946. PH-193 (1945), PH-739 (1944), and PH-298 (1942) line the wall from left to right. PH-314 (1945) appears on the wall to the right of a doorway. Typed notations offer information concerning the artworks’ materials, provenance, and measurements. As Still’s first one-person show in New York, the exhibition featured twelve paintings, as well as a portfolio of twenty-three works on paper. Mark Rothko wrote the influential text for the exhibition’s brochure, while Guggenheim purportedly assigned mythological titles to each artwork at the suggestion of Surrealist André Breton.
