Work Description:
This contact print depicts an installation view of the exhibition “Clyfford Still” at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York. From left to right, PH-281 (1943), PH-304 (1946), and PH-330 (1946) occupy the gallery. A portion of PH-189 (1946, cropped) appears on the far right of the frame. On view April 17 through April 26, 1947, the exhibition was Still’s first solo presentation at the gallery. Prior to its installation, Still wrote to Parsons to declare his decision to eliminate titles and “extraneous statements” when exhibiting his artwork. Parsons complied with the artist’s wishes, and the fifteen paintings were displayed without titles.
