Work Description:
In this black and white portrait, Clyfford Still appears before PH-177 (1949), which acts as a backdrop for the photograph. Situated toward the right of the frame, Still's torso fades into the darkness of the background. He faces forward, but avoids looking at the camera. The artist wears glasses and a black sweater over a light-colored shirt. He also sports a mustache. The abstracted shapes within the painting occupy the left background of the image. Hans Namuth photographed Still in his studio at 48 Cooper Square in New York City on November 24, 1951.
