Work Description:
In this early black and white portrait, Clyfford Still sits before an easel in a studio classroom at University High School in Spokane, Washington. Facing the canvas, the artist composes a regionalist-style landscape that features a team of white horses on a farm (see PH-784 verso). A nearby wooden stool displays a model of a white horse. A reproduction of Millet's "The Wood Sawyers" (1850-52) hangs on the wall above the easel, while another reproduction, Millet's "Trussing Hay" (1850), appears on the far right. Still wears a suit and holds a palette and a paintbrush in his lap.
