Work Description:
Photographed and developed by Sandra Still, this black and white contact sheet features thirty images. In twenty-five images, Clyfford Still stands before PH-397 (1948-9), which is mounted over a set of wooden doors in the foyer of his home at 312 Church Street in New Windsor, Maryland. The artist wears a dark painter's smock over a black shirt, black slacks, and a plaid tie. He holds a large palette and several paintbrushes while posing in various positions in front of the artwork. In the remaining five images, Still sits in a wooden chair before a neutral backdrop. He wears a black suit with a plaid tie, and sports a beard. With his right hand gripping the chair's armrest, Still extends the fingers of his left hand across his left leg. The artist looks away from the camera in all but one photograph within this series.
