Work Description:
A stylized form rises from the lower half of the work into a flat black field. This primary form is left as bare canvas, and the black background is painted, thus creating a tension between the positive and negative spaces in the composition and flattening the scene. This particular form is derived from Still's sketches while he worked in the San Francisco Bay Area shipyards, and has a mechanistic quality. The swooping void at the bottom-left resembles many of Still's studies of ship-hulls and their blueprints.
