Work Description:
Though this painting is covered almost entirely in black and dark brown/almost black pigment, its varied surface reflectance creates an incredible sense of depth and spatial interplay. An irregular crimson shape breaks through the darkness into the scene at the top left edge, and seems to reach for a tiny golden dash floating amidst the dark background at top left. Dark brown and black vertical striations running across the composition have been covered in varnish so that they stand out from the rest of the dark field. The consequent imagery recalls leggy vegetation or bark patterns.
