Work Description:
Still's use of a thick, impastoed paint application emphasizes the medium and surface of the painting. The entire canvas is dominated by a large vertical white form running from top to bottom edge. It is punctured at its top left by a deep brown-black void which reveals the deep brown pigment filling the background and surrounding the white form. A yellow form with a brown "lifeline" at its center rises from the bottom edge of the work and runs through the center of the larger white form. A single sky-blue semi-circle is located at top right edge of this larger white form. The negative space around these forms is interrupted by two thin, ghostly red lifelines originating at the top edge of the work. To the white form's left, a smaller, floating vertical white form lies parallel to the canvas' left edge and has a crimson red line at its core.
