Work Description:
This painting shows four figures set in a gloomy farm-like environment. The figure on the left wears a red sleeveless shirt and blue jeans. He stares out towards the viewer. The figure in the center of the composition sits with his legs outstretched and his oversized, bloodied hands crossed in front of his body in a pose reminiscent of a Millet pastel drawing Still references in several of his works. This figure's head is thrown back in despair, and his shirtless torso is gaunt and skeletal. The lone female figure in the scene is positioned on the right of the painting and painted in profile. She looks back towards the other two seated male figures and wears a yellow dress. Behind her, a male figures wearing overalls and a white button-up shirt stands and holds an unidentifiable object in his proper left hand. A plow and tractor are set behind the figures and are silhouetted against an evening sky.
