Work Description:
Often referred to as the "Pieta," this painting shows two figures sitting on a wooden bench against a cream-colored wooden wall. The female figure sits on the left with her head thrown back and resting against the wall. She has jet-black hair and wears only a red skirt. Her bony shoulders, gaunt facial features, and oversized feet are emphasized with bold outlines and thick impastoed pigment. The male figure lays across the bench and rests his elongated head in the woman's lap. His long, manneristic arms and oversized hands fall across his body and onto the gray ground. His ribs protrude and are silhouetted against the background. He wears blue jeans and worn gray shoes. A horseshoe hangs on the wall directly to the right of the woman's head.
