Work Description:
Three forms created through Still's use of negative space (bare canvas) rise out of a mound painted in varied tones of brown, ochre, red and cobalt. The three vertical figures taper off to a point at their apices and are each haloed by a golden brown disc. They rise in front of a deep blue background, which when read in conjunction with the brown mound covering the bottom third of the canvas, suggests the entire scene may be alluding to some kind of primordial landscape. Still's interplay between negative and positive space is central in this composition, as the vertical figures rendered in bare canvas compete spatially with their painted and textural blue background.
