Work Description:
This painting marks a new level of abstraction for Still. The figure has been reduced to stylized lines, elongated forms, and bold colors. However, the figure's head (identified by two side-by-side dots at top center), his oversized arms and hands, a knee and brown shoe can still be identified. From these elements, the viewer is able to understand that the figure depicted in this painting sits on a ledge with his proper left leg overhanging the edge and his proper right knee bent at an angle so that his shoe rests upon the ledge as well. He has a green handkerchief in his back overall pocket and wears a yellow, long-sleeved shirt. The background has begun to merge with the foreground, and the paint medium is emphasized via broad, thick brushstrokes. A red, horizontal pole-like object juts into the composition from the left behind the figure's shoulders.
