Work Description:
Still's classic "turkey" red pigment fills the canvas in this monumental, classic Abstract Expressionist work. A thick, irregularly-shaped maroon band of color runs from the right lower edge horizontally across to the left edge before swirling up and slightly towards the right again before dissipating near the top edge. Fiery black forms dance within the maroon passage, starting out larger at the work's bottom center and shrinking in size as they rise. Tiny flashes of orange, yellow and white are scattered over the black forms infusing them with dynamism and an intangible life-force. A gray dagger-shaped form with a cobalt center juts into the scene from the upper left edge and is also surrounded by maroon paint. The cobalt blue is echoed by barely perceivable strokes of pigment within the various black forms.
